The idea
A major triad with a ♭7
G7 is G B D F — a G major triad plus the ♭7 (F). The major 3rd (B) and ♭7 (F) form a tritone, the interval that creates the chord's strong pull.
- Notes: R 3 5 ♭7 = G B D F.
- The 3 and ♭7 form a tritone — the source of the tension.
- It wants to resolve, most often to C.
Where it lives
The V of a major key
G7 is the V7 in C major — the chord that drives a progression home. It is the engine of blues, and the 'V' in every ii–V–I.
- Use it as V7 resolving to I (G7 → C).
- It is the sound of a 12-bar blues in G or C.
- Pair with Dm7 and Cmaj7 for a full ii–V–I.
