A minor scale with one bright note
D Dorian is D E F G A B C. It is minor (it has the ♭3, F), but where natural minor has a ♭6 (B♭), Dorian raises it to a natural 6 (B).
- The ♭3 (F) keeps it minor.
- The natural 6 (B) is the one change vs natural minor.
- That single note makes it a brighter, more hopeful minor.

How to make it sound Dorian
Dorian loves a static minor groove. The fastest way to hear it is a i–IV vamp — in D, Dm to G — because that G chord carries the natural 6 (B).
